How to Start a UI/UX Design Career With No Experience
A practical roadmap for complete beginners: what to learn first, how to build a portfolio without a design degree, and how mentors speed it up.
You don't need a design degree
Most working UI/UX designers in India did not study design in college. What hiring managers look for is a portfolio that shows you can understand a problem, design a solution, and explain why you made each choice.
That is good news if you are starting from zero: the path is about skills and proof of work, not certificates alone.
Learn in this order
Start with UX fundamentals — user research, personas, user flows and information architecture. These teach you to think like a designer before you open any tool.
Then move to UI: typography, colour, spacing, layout and components. Figma is the industry-standard tool and free to learn on.
Finally, learn design systems and handoff — how real teams ship consistent products. This is what separates a hobbyist from someone a company can hire.
Build a portfolio before you feel ready
Two or three strong case studies beat ten unfinished screens. Pick real problems — a local shop's ordering flow, a college event app — and document your process: research, sketches, wireframes, final designs, and the reasoning behind each decision.
At Snailtechs, every learner ships real projects with mentor feedback that explains the 'why' behind every review, so your portfolio tells a story interviewers trust.
Get feedback early and often
The fastest way to grow is explained feedback from someone who has shipped real products. Self-paced videos can't tell you why your layout doesn't work — a mentor can.
If you're in Chennai, Coimbatore or Puducherry, you can sit with a mentor in person. Online learners get the same 1:1 sessions over Zoom or Teams.
